Starter Kit for Imagining from a Moving Body

You are invited to attempt the impossible yet promising pursuit of perceiving at the speed of your sensation and imagination. Fear not, there is nothing to achieve and, therefore, no way to fail. However, there is much to notice along the way. This speculative “techno-exercise” is offered to anyone engaged in critical thinking or making. Consider it a method for resting, sustaining or altering your perspective from within your current intellectual or artistic practices. Movement is the medium. The definition of movement begins with breath.

Below are three voice guided mini trips to invite your attention, sensation and imagination into movement. Take time to answer the reflection questions between each exercise or at the end of all three. Articulate your responses through writing, drawing or recording your own voice. Repeat or elaborate as needed.

  • Find or make a relatively clear, clean space about the size of your own body or more. With a bit of floor and a bit of wall if possible
  • Wherever you are, find a bit of privacy.
  • Try closing your eyes whenever it feels safe to do so.
  • At any given moment, move exactly as much or as little as you desire.
  • If you get lost, slow down, take a pause, take a breath and return to noticing.
  • Follow what intrigues or piques your curiosity and leave the rest. This may change.

Begin exercises 1 and 2 in a comfortable position, laying down or sitting comfortably.
Begin exercise 3 leaning against a wall, standing, sitting or otherwise.
